The men and women who staff Emory’s Hospitals and clinics are as versatile as they come. Talented researchers, enthusiastic teachers, and dedicated clinicians, they are as committed to Emory’s culture of caring as they are to the technology and techniques that restore their patients’ health.
When Doug Morris joined the Emory faculty in 1975, cardiologists had no idea what caused a heart attack or how to stop it. They put heart patients in the hospital, watched and waited, and dealt with the complications.
“Now we can stop a heart attack in its tracks and avoid the complications,” says Morris, who has directed the Emory Heart and Vascular Center since 1993. “The progress has been amazing.”
Emory cardiologists and heart surgeons are at the forefront of the latest developments in heart disease treatment—minimally invasive surgeries and new techniques that cause
remarkably little trauma to patients. Emory’s cardiology nurses are developing strategies to minimize symptoms, improve care, and educate patients.
“We want to be on the cutting edge in advancing science in cardiology, providing patients with the highest quality of care in a safe environment, and educating the next generation of physicians,” Morris says.
As the J. Willis Hurst Professor of Medicine, Morris teaches residents and fellows to apply evidence-based medicine while understanding the concerns and values of patients and their families. He has earned nearly a dozen teaching awards and the respect of his students, staff, and colleagues alike—not bad for someone who insists he simply “fell into” a career in medicine.
